Profile Photos

You can upload a photo of yourself to HOPS for use on Heritage Railway Safety Service ID Cards and also to enable 'putting a face to a name', which is so often a problem in heritage and volunteer organisations.

Some photo requirements are necessary to ensure technical compatibility with displaying in HOPS (to authorised users) and printing on ID Card stationery.

Passport-style photos are best for HOPS:
- just showing head, which should take up at least 50% of the photo area
- taken in colour and against a plain, white or light-coloured background
- ideally not wearing a hat
- not too dark, taken in daylight or a well-lit room
- no filters, artistic effects, borders, rabbit ears, etc
- no other distractions, props, political messages, holding things or in the background, steam locos, etc
- include no other people
- be relatively recent and accurately reflect your recent visual appearance
- If you normally wear glasses you can wear them in your photo (this is different to passport rules but is ok for HOPS!)

An example of a good photo is shown, left.

Smiling is allowed!

Photos of you under a loco or with a welding mask on might well say more about your personality, but it doesn't help people identify you, especially in a community where everyone's interests are the same!

Passport-style photos* are also required for the production of ID cards at places that use HOPS ID Cards (and future proofing for those that don't). (* - Wearing of glasses IS allowed.)

In most cases, newly uploaded photos won't be displayed on the site until they are accepted by an administrator. In approving photos, the overriding determining factor will be the clarity of the identity of the person's facial features. This may mean that some photos which comply with the rules are declined, and some that don't might occasionally be accepted. A common sense approach is taken. Please contact HOPS if you would like a photo to be re-considered.

You can upload a photograph of yourself to your profile to help other members recognise you.

Click on the 'person' avatar symbol in the top right hand corner of HOPS and select 'My AAA Details' (where AAA is the initials of your railway).

You will be taken to the page showing all your personal details.

Click on the camera symbol in the photo frame on the right hand side to upload a new photograph.

Please note not all organisations allow users to edit their own details. Should you find that the camera button is not displayed, contact your HOPS Admin for guidance.

HOPS is continually being developed and updated. Sometimes the screen shots in these help files might lag behind the most up-to-date views of the screens. Generally, however, the functionality of the page will be the same, albeit with a slightly different format or layout.
